Efficient ways of storing instant solar energy available in form of irradiation, wind, waves, tides, etc., are fundamental ingredients for the transition to what is called “renewable energy.$rdquo; Batteries play a major role in energy storage. Battery technology is evolving very fast. The Community of Practice in this VCC is engaged in conceptual developments for the use of batteries in many different applications. The goal is to ensure that batteries meet all requirements of a decentralized societal energy system for energy storage with minimal impact on the environment in a truly circular economy.

[Apr 25, 2026] Growing fire hazards of lithium-ion batteries: Libby Brooks in her article “Fire experts ‘kept awake’ over growing hazard of lithium-ion batteries” published in the Guardian indicates that the ubiquity of batteries in everyday products is outpacing public understanding and safety regulations. She reports on a sharp increase in battery-related fires across Scotland and that firefighters in London attend e-bike or e-scooter fires every other day.

[May 09, 2026] Doomsday Clock is Getting Closer to Midnight: In January, the Doomsday clock was set to 85 seconds before midnight, the closest setting since it was established in 1947 in response to the threat of nuclear war. Sophie McBain in her article “‘The odds are not in our favour’: who sets the Doomsday Clock – and what can they tell us about the future of humanity?” emphasizes that with the wars on Iran and on the Ukraine, the rapid and largely uncontrolled development of AI and the climate breakdown all together increasing the likelihood of a nuclear war, the clock now stands closer to midnight than ever before. She asks the question of whether we can buy ourselves more time.
