Everything solar is about much more than just using solar energy to power technical equipment. It's about energy flows in processes from the start to the end. Many processes once were fully based on solar energy and today are based on fossil fuels. A house built with wood uses mainly materials created with solar energy (photosynthese), while a house built with concrete use materials made available with heavy machinery fueled with fossil fuels. This VCC takes a holistic view on the flows of energy through all processes in our society from start to end and assesses where more instantaneous solar energy can be used. We review all structures, processes, and feedback loops in our society with respect to the energy needed and the source of energy with the goal to develop novel concepts and approaches that are low-energy and based on the use of instantaneous solar energy.

[May 09, 2026] Doomsday Clock is Getting Closer to Midnight: In January, the Doomsday clock was set to 85 seconds before midnight, the closest setting since it was established in 1947 in response to the threat of nuclear war. Sophie McBain in her article‘The odds are not in our favour’: who sets the Doomsday Clock – and what can they tell us about the future of humanity?” emphasizes that with the wars on Iran and on the Ukraine, the rapid and largely uncontrolled development of AI and the climate breakdown all together increasing the likelihood of a nuclear war, the clock now stands closer to midnight than ever before. She asks the question of whether we can buy ourselves more time.
