National Academy of Science Climate: Virginia Crossroads: Flood Resilience across the Commonwealth

Hans-Peter Plag:

The National Academy of Science organized on March 27, 2026 the climate event “Virginia Crossroads: Flood Resilience across the Commonwealth” in Charlottesville, Virginia. The event feature three main panels on “Urban Flooding Resilience,” “Rural Flooding Resilience,” and “Innovations in Flood Resilience.” The main focus was on mitigation of the impacts of sea level rise and more frequent and more extreme weather events, while a discussion of disaster risk governance was basically absent. A lot of panel members spend considerable time on speaking about money. Discussion about the risk spectrum and the inter-generational distribution of risk was mostly avoided.

The full recording gives a good overview of the challenges resulting from the focus on the present problems and those in the near future, and the neglect of the enormous risks attached to future sea level rise.
